volume powder for men

Perhaps you have heard of volume powder. This relatively new product is also known as hair powder, texture powder or styling powder. It is basically all the same. But what is it exactly and why should you use it?

Volume powder has become exceedingly popular lately and many men use it frequently. You can use it by itself, but in many cases, men use it as a pre-styling product to achieve more volume in their hair before applying another product for more hold and styling.

What is volume powder?

A volume powder is usually made out of silica silylate or certain starches, like potato starch, corn starch or rise starch. This powder is easily absorbed by your hair making it thicker and fuller. It also absorbs excessive oil from your hair. That is why it almost always provides a matte finish.

Volume powders are hair styling products to increase volume and texture. That is why so many men use it as a pre-styling product, because you will get a lot of volume in your hair without blow-drying it.

Properties of volume powder

Volume powder has very specific properties and that is why this type of product is so popular among men. It is specifically formulated to create more folume and texture while making your hair appear thicker.

Light to medium hold

Generally speaking, a volume powder will provide a light to medium hold. That means it will maintain your hairstyle pretty well, but not as much as a strong hair wax or hair clay.

Matte finish

Many men use volume powder because of the zero shine matte finish. There are not that many hair styling products that provide such a matte finish as volume powders. The hair powder absorbs oil and sweat, so that your hair will not be too shiny.

Texture

Hair powders also provide texture. That works really well for messy hairstyles, because the volume powders prevent your hair from sticking together. That way you can achieve a lot of texture, hence the name texture powders.

Volume

When you apply a volume powder at your hair roots, you can create a lot of volume and lift. Your hair will appear thicker and fuller. That is especially convenient for men with thinning hair.

Covering bald spots

If your hair is getting thinner at your crown, you can use some volume powder to hide that if it has not progressed too much yet. Because of the volume and matte finish, you cannot look straight on your scalp.

What hairstyles work best with volume powders?

Usually, volume powders are used for hairstyles that require a lot of texture. That is why examples of popular hairstyles are the French crop, fringe look, textured quiff, and faux hawk.

French crop

What all these hairstyles have in common is their matte finish and texture. A volume powder will not work for classic hairstyles, slick-looks or any other shiny hairstyles.

Of course you can combine a volume powder with a shinier product if you do not like the matte finish because it makes your hair look dull.

In that case you are using the volume powder as a prestyler. That means you are applying it before you apply your favorite wax, clay, gel or pomade. Many prestylers are applied in damp hair, but a volume powder should not be applied in damp hair.

You always apply a volume powder in dry hair and of course you should also not blow-dry your hair afterwards, because it would blow away the powder. Distribute it evenly through your hair and let your hair absorb it.

Fringe hair

When should you NOT use a volume powder?

A volume powder can basically be used for all hair types, but it works best for men with normal to thin hair. When you have very thick hair, a volume powder will not add that much and it can make your hair stiff.

When you have very dry hair, then a volume powder is perhaps not for you either. Because of the absorbing properties and the matte finish, it can make your hair dryer then you would like. That is why a volume powder works particularly well for men with oily hair.

When you like to blow-dry your hair in combination with other pre-styling products, it is best not to use a volume powder. In that case it would be better to use a sea salt spray to achieve more volume in your hair.

Is a volume powder bad for your hair or scalp?

There does not seem to be data that suggests that a volume powder is bad for your hair or scalp, unless you are sensitive to certain ingredients in it of course. In our Moquer shop we always provide the ingredient list on the product page, so please look at that carefully before purchasing a product.

That is also why it is so important to use premium products. Cheaper products will contain cheaper ingredients. Volume powders available in supermarkets or drugstores are different compared to the high-end products in our Moquer shop.

But like with most hair products it is recommended not to keep them in your hair too long. When a hair styling product is in your hair too long, then it can cause an irritated scalp, white flakes and an oily (or in some cases dry) feeling.

That is why we recommend washing any hair styling product, including volume powders, out of your hair at night or perhaps the next morning. Use a high quality shampoo for men to do that.
